Chapter 17
The next morning, Susan and Valerie gathered under the pavilion with the other members of the training class. Sheâd gotten an email from the community school saying the class would continue with a substitute instructor and was glad it hadnât fallen apart. A fortyish woman with a high ponytail and pink windbreaker introduced herself as Annie.
âIâll be your coach from now until the race. I have a personal stake in this, being a breast cancer survivor myself. Not only am I an advocate for breast cancer research, I also know I wouldnât have gotten through the treatment without my daily walks. Not that I was always able to walk much, depending on where I was in my chemo cycle, but getting outside and exercising when I could helped enormously. It added structure to my day and gave me a mental break. I didnât have to see my husbandâs worry and I didnât have to hear my son asking my husband whether or not I was going to die.â
Cassie said, âI heard walking can help prevent breast cancer.â
Annie answered, âStudies show that walking may reduce certain hormones that encourage cancer growth.â
Cassie nodded. âWelcome. Thank you for filling in for us. Are we still going to talk about eating tips?â
âOf course. Iâm not sure what youâve already discussed, but feel free to get the ball rolling.â
Vinnie said, âIâve been doing my share of stress eating lately. I lost my business partner, and Iâm down an employee. I donât have the energy to make dinner or pack a healthy lunch. Then, I wind up going through a drive-thru or eating junk food for dinner.â
Annie said, âWhat about frozen dinners? There are healthy ones out there. If you stock your freezer, you can pop one into the microwave and it takes no time at all. And yogurt is filling. Look for low fat and less than 5 grams of sugar. And the more protein it has, the better.â
âIâm a big guy.â Vinnie patted his stomach. âThose things donât fill me up.â
âKeep prepackaged salad and frozen veggies in the house to augment it. And add a piece of fruit. Apples, grapes, and oranges last a while in the fridge. If youâre still hungry, you can top it off with a cup of hot tea or sugar free cocoa. Something sweet to signal the end of the meal.â
Mildred said, âWe have three weeks until the race. Are we working on speed or just aiming to finish the race?â
Cassie said, âWeâve all been completing the 3.1 miles. Tony was having us pick up the pace.â
âItâs what you feel comfortable with. When I started running, Iâd jog a minute, walk a minute. Then I jogged 2 minutes, walked a minute. You get the idea. It makes the time go faster and you do feel a certain sense of accomplishment when you realize youâre covering the same distance in less time. Letâs get started.â
Vinnie said, âBefore we get started, I have an announcement. There will be a memorial service for Roy tomorrow.
